St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 14, 2013 – Washington University in St. Louis freshman middle hitter Caroline Dupont and sophomore middle hitter Jackie Nelligan were each selected to the 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III All-Central Region First Team, while senior outside hitter Meghan Byrne received all-region honorable mention honors, as announced Thursday by the Association.
Dupont, the lone freshman on the 14-person all-Central Region team, was also named the Central Region Freshman of the Year. She is the fourth WUSTL player in school history to receive Central Region Freshman of the Year honors, joining Colleen Winter (2001), Kelly Pang (2009) and Byrne (2010). Nelligan was one of two sophomores selected to the all-Central Region team, while Byrne picked up the third all-region honor of her career on with the honorable mention nod. She is the 17th player in school history to receive all-region honors at least three times in her career. Dupont and Nelligan were named to the all-University Athletic Association (UAA) first team, while Byrne was on the second team, announced Tuesday.
Dupont, who was also the co-UAA Rookie of the Year, leads Washington U. and ranks second in the UAA and 38th in NCAA Division III with a .352 hitting percentage in her first collegiate season. She is also second on the team with 349 kills and 101 blocks, and has hit .500 or better in 10 matches this season. Her 0.86 blocks per set (third) and 2.96 kills per set (seventh) also rank in the top-10 in the UAA. Dupont was named the UAA Athlete of the Week four times during the season, and was selected as the AVCA Division III National Player of the Week Sept. 10.
Nelligan ranks second in the UAA with 0.90 blocks per set and is tied for fifth with a .324 hitting percentage this season. She ranks third on the team with 275 kills and has a team-best 103 blocks. Nelligan recorded the first double-double of her career with 15 kills and a career-high 11 blocks in the Bears' five-set win at then-No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Oct. 11. She has recorded double-digit kills in 11 matches in 2013. Nelligan has been selected to three all-tournament teams this season, and was named the UAA Athlete of the Week Sept. 30.
Byrne, who also received all-Central Region honors in 2010 and 2011, became the 23rd player in school history to surpass 1,000 career kills by tallying a career-high 22 in the season opener against Webster University Aug. 31. She currently ranks 12th on Washington University's career kills list (1,258) and is eighth on the Bears' career attacks list (3,228). Byrne leads the Bears with 45 service aces this season, and ranks third in the UAA with 0.41 aces per set. She is also third on the team with 2.46 kills per set. Byrne has recorded two double-doubles this season and was named the UAA Athlete of the Week Sept. 3.
Washington University (26-7) begins the 2013 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship by taking on Wisconsin-Whitewater at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Elmhurst, Ill., Regional.
