
Pleasantville, N.Y., April 21, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team closed out a three-game series at New York University with a 4-3 loss Sunday in Pleasantville, N.Y. Game four of the series was cancelled.
Diana King hit a two-run walk-off homerun off freshman Madison Denton with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
NYU improved to 18-11 and 6-7 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while WashU dropped to 13-14 and 4-7 in the conference.
Denton (7-6) took the loss allowing one hit and one earned run, while sophomore Kendall Schwartz made the start and allowed three hits and one earned run in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
The teams combined for just two hits in the first four innings as neither team could push across a run.
WashU scored three unearned runs on two hits and took advantage of three errors in the fifth to jump in front 3-0. Junior Amy Walsh and senior Taylor Arends drove in runs with a pair of RBI singles.
NYU tacked on a run in the fifth, and then scored three runs on three hits in its last at-bat.
Arends went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI as WashU was limited to three hits and committed two errors.
WashU opens an eight-game homestand to end the 2019 season against Webster University (10-22) on Tuesday, April 23, at 3 p.m.
