SCOUTING MISSOURI STATE – The Bears were picked first in the 2019-20 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Preseason Poll. Missouri State returns three starters from last year's squad that posted a 16-16 record and tied for the third in the MVC standings. Head coach Dana Ford enters his second season after serving four years as head coach at Tennessee State.
Senior forward Tulio Da Silva (14.3 ppg, 7.4 rpg) earned All-MVC Preseason first-team honors, while senior Keandre Cook (12.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg) picked up Second-Team accolades. Also earning preseason honors for MSU are newcomers Lamont West and Gaige Prim, who were named to the All-MVC Preseason third team. West led West Virginia in scoring last season (11.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 64-3-pointers) before coming to Springfield this fall as a graduate transfer.
SERIES NOTES – WashU and Missouri State have split four all-time meetings, and the two teams are meeting on the hardwood for the first time since Feb. 12, 1963 - a 72-62 victory by WashU in Springfield, Mo.
EXHIBITION HISTORY – Since 2006, WashU is 1-2 in exhibition games with a win over NCAA Division II Missouri-St. Louis (91-90, 2008) and losses to Illinois (82-75, 2016) and SIU Carbondale (59-28, 2006).
A LOOK BACK AT 2018-19 – WashU returns four starters and 13 letterwinners from last year's squad, which won 10 of its last 12 games to finish with a 17-8 overall record. The Bears finished in second place in the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings, and secured its 35th-straight winning season.
HARDY NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN – Sophomore forward Justin Hardy was named to the 2019-20 Street & Smith's Preseason All-America Team. Hardy started all 25 games and was second on the squad averaging 14.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game a year ago. He was named to the 2019 DIII News All-Freshman Team, and picked up UAA Rookie of the Year honors.
BEAR TRACKS – Junior guard Jack Nolan is 70-of-74 (94.59 percent) in his two-year career from the free-throw line. Nolan's mark would be tops in NCAA history at any level, but does not qualify. (Minimum 250 free throws made). Blake Ahearn of Missouri State holds the record at 94.56% (435-of-460). Nolan is chasing his uncle Gene (1992-96), WashU's all-time leader in free-throw percentage at 85.7 (281-328).
– The Bears led the conference a year ago in field-goal percentage (.485), rebounding defense (31.4) and home attendance (534 per game).
DID YOU KNOW – WashU has won the MVC Men's Basketball Championship three times in school history - 1928-29 (7-0); 1929-30 (6-2); 1930-31 (5-3). The Bears were a member of the MVC from 1907-42.
