St. Louis, Mo., January 29, 2014 – Washington University in St. Louis men's basketball coach Mark Edwards has been named the DIII News/Schelde Sports Coach of the Month for January, the publication announced Wednesday.
Edwards has guided Washington U. to a 7-0 mark in the month of January with one remaining game Friday, Jan. 31, at the University of Rochester. The Bears opened the new year with wins over No. 24 ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) Jan. 2 and Webster University Jan. 4, and followed with five conference victories to extend Washington U.'s winning streak to a season-long nine games.
A three-time DIII News National Coach of the Year, Edwards has posted a 597-266 (.692) overall record in 33 seasons at his alma mater. He ranks seventh in NCAA Division III victories by active coaches with 597 wins, and is on pace to become the ninth NCAA Division III and 80th men's college basketball coach to win 600 games.
Washington University has a 14-2 overall record in 2013-14, and is a perfect 5-0 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Bears are ranked No. 7 in the D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll.
