Nine WUSTL Individuals Qualify for NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships
St. Louis, Mo., May 19, 2013 – The Washington University in St. Louis track & field teams had three men and six women qualify to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25, at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in La Crosse, Wis.
The top-16 relays, along with the top 20 individual men and the top 22 individual women in each event were accepted into the competition. Washington University’s qualifiers include: senior Anne Diaz-Arrastia; juniors Michael Ellenberger, Anna Etherington, Kevin Sparks and Jasmine Williams; sophomores Melissa Gilkey, Drew Padgett and Claire Simons; and freshman Emily Warner.
Five of Washington University’s nine qualifiers will compete on the meet’s opening day Thursday. Etherington, who had the second-best qualifying mark, and Simons (20th) compete in the women’s pole vault beginning at 2:40 p.m. Diaz-Arrastia competes in the women’s long jump at 3 p.m. after qualifying in 11th. On the track, Sparks and Ellenberger compete in the men’s 10,000 finals at 7:05 p.m. Sparks qualified in 18th, while Ellenberger was 19th.
Williams and Warner will be in action Friday. Williams competes in the women’s high jump at 2:15 p.m. after posting the third-highest mark during the regular season. Warner will take the track in the women’s 400 prelims at 5:50 p.m. She had the sixth-fastest qualifying time. The final of the women’s 400 is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. Saturday.
Gilkey and Padgett close the meet for Washington U. during Saturday’s events. Gilkey qualified ninth in the women’s javelin, which is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Padgett competes in the second-to-last event on the track, the men’s 5,000, at 5:55 p.m.
The qualifying marks for Diaz-Arrastia, Etherington, Gilkey, Padgett, Warner and Williams are all school records. Etherington is the only returning outdoor All-American, having finished fourth in the women’s pole vault in 2012, while also placing fourth at the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. Diaz-Arrastia (pentathlon, triple jump) and Warner (800) also earned All-America honors at the 2013 Indoor Championships. Ellenberger, Gilkey, Padgett, Simons and Sparks will be making their first trips to the national championships.
