WUSTL’s Drew Padgett Named USTFCCCA Men’s Cross Country National Athlete of the Week
St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 4, 2013 – For the second time this season, junior Drew Padgett was selected as the NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as announced Monday by the organization.
Padgett, who also received National Athlete of the Week honors Sept. 3, captured the University Athletic Association (UAA) individual championship to lead Washington U. to its fourth conference team title in a row Saturday at the UAA Championships in Pittsburgh. He earned UAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year and first-team all-UAA honors with his individual title. Padgett was also named the UAA Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week Monday.
He finished the 8K course in 25:10.5 to lead four top-six finishers for Washington University. He was nearly seven seconds ahead of last year’s champion and senior teammate Kevin Sparks. The Bears had six runners finish in the top-14 individually to score 26 points and finish 23 points ahead of runner-up New York University in the team standings.
Awarded to six collegiate track & field and cross country athletes (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions) each Monday by the USTFCCCA office beginning with the 2013 indoor season, the National Athlete of the Week Award spotlights exceptional performances by student-athletes from around the nation.
