In 19 seasons as a varsity program, the Washington University
women's soccer team has placed itself among the nation's best.
The Bears have endured just three losing seasons in that time
and none since 1994. Washington University has a 227-98-26 (.684)
record over that span, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances,
four University Athletic Association (UAA) titles and a Division
III Final Four appearance in 1997.
Back-to-back 13-win seasons in 1999 and
2000 and two consecutive NCAA tournament quarterfinal appearances
in 1997 and 1998-including a trip to the 1997 NCAA Division
III Final Four-cemented Washington University's women's soccer
team as a national power.
WU rewrote the school record book in 1998,
establishing new marks for goals (91), assists (72) and points
(254) on the way to a 17-3-1 record and a berth in the NCAA
quarterfinals. Along the way the Bears won a school-record
12-straight games and tied the club mark with 11 shutouts.
The 1997 Bears savored their finest season
since the program's inception in 1989. They finished the year
with a school-record 17 wins (17-4-1) and placed third after
falling to eventual national champion UC San Diego in a national
semifinal match.
Wendy Dillinger arrived on the Danforth Campus, and wasted no time
making her mark at Washington University. In 2006, the Bears tied the school record with a 17-3 overall record, including a 7-0 record in UAA play. Dillinger also helped mentor D3Kicks.com National Player of the Year, MeghanMarie Fowler-Finn. Dillinger The Bears also posted 17 victories in 2004 and 2006, including an NCAA Sectional Final appearance in 2004.
Washington University has produced 71 all-UAA honorees, 34 all-Region
honorees and six All-Americans. |
