ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA
Washington University's track and field programs consistently
finish atop the University Athletic Association (UAA) and
compete with the best in Division III. Fourth-year head coach Paul Thornton has kept the ball rolling. Consider the following: he has mentored WU's women squad to eight University Athletic Association (UAA) championships in eight attempts (indoor and outdoor), extending its conference reign--a period from 2000-07 when the Bears have won all 16 indoor and outdoor titles. Moreover, the men swept the 2005 and 2006 indoor and outdoor titles at the UAA Championship, marking the first and second times in program history that WU's men's and women's teams achieved the feat during the same season. The Red and Green took both indoor titles again in 2007.
Additionally, WU's women placed a program-best ninth at the 2005 NCAA indoor Championships. The Bears also placed 13th at the 2005 NCAA Outdoors, and nine student-athletes combined to register 18 indoor and outdoor All-America citations, which is a school single-season record.
The men's team has won a combined total of 20 UAA indoor
and outdoor titles since 1988, including an indoor/outdoor
sweep from 1988-1991 and in 1997, 1999, 2005 and 2006. The women's team
won its first UAA track and field title at the 1994 outdoor
meet and has totaled 20 championships overall.
A total of 36 Washington U. athletes have earned 81 All-America
citations and four national championships--Emily Richard (5,000
meters, 1998 outdoor and 1999 indoor), Dave Bolton (decathlon,
1988) and Marvin Williams (200 meters, 1988). In all, WU has
also garnered 457 individual UAA titles.
In addition, 11 student-athletes have been named to the
Academic All-America Team. Of those 11 competitors, five were
named to the first team.
