Washington University's track and field programs consistently finish atop the University Athletic Association (UAA) and compete with the best in Division III. First-year head coach Jeff Stiles continued that success in 2009, as the Washington U. women won the University Athletic Association (UAA) indoor and outdoor titles, while the WU men's squad made it a Washington U. sweep at the UAA Outdoor meet. The women's team went on to place fifth at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, marking the highest finish at the NCAA outdoor meet in school history.

Prior to Stiles taking over the reigns, Paul Thornton mentored WU's women's squad to nine UAA championships in 10 attempts (indoor and outdoor), and was part of a conference reign from 2000-07 when the Bears won all 16 indoor and outdoor titles. Moreover, the men swept the 2005, 2006 and 2007 indoor and outdoor titles at the UAA Championships, marking the only times in program history that WU's men's and women's teams achieved the feat during the same season.

WU's women placed a then WU school-record ninth at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships. The Bears finished 13th at the 2005 NCAA Outdoors, and nine student-athletes combined to register 18 indoor and outdoor All-America citations, which is a school single-season record. In 2008, the Bears marked a new all-time best finish at an NCAA Championship meet, as the women's team came in third place at the indoor championships.

The men's team has won a combined total of 21 UAA indoor and outdoor titles since 1988, including an indoor/outdoor sweep from 1988-1991 and in 1997, 1999, 2005 and 2006. The women's team won its first UAA track and field title at the 1994 outdoor meet and has totaled 23 championships overall.

A total of 45 Washington U. athletes have earned 106 All-America citations and five national championships--Emily Richard (5,000 meters, 1998 outdoor and 1999 indoor), Dave Bolton (decathlon, 1988), Marvin Williams (200 meters, 1988) and Morgen Leonard-Fleckman (pole vault, 2008 indoor). In all, WU has also garnered 510 individual UAA titles.

In addition, 11 student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-America Team. Of those 11 competitors, five were named to the first team.
