St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 12, 2018 – The No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's cross country team was awarded one of the 16 at-large bids to the 2018 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship, as announced by the NCAA on Sunday.
The WashU men will join the No. 2-ranked women's cross country team who earned an automatic bid with a first place finish at the Midwest Regional Championship.
The Bears' men placed third at the Midwest Regional on Saturday and were one of six teams from the Midwest Region to earn a trip to nationals. Also earning bids were No. 1 North Central, No. 5 Wisconsin-La Crosse, No. 14 Wisconsin-Eau Claire, No. 16 Wisconsin-Stout and No. 18 Chicago.
Of the 36 women's teams to compete at the Midwest Regionals, five earned trips to nationals. WashU and No. 9 Wisconsin-Eau Claire earned the automatic bids, while No. 22 Wisconsin-La Crosse, No. 11 Chicago and No. 7 Wheaton (Ill.) earned at-large bids.
The WashU men's cross country team becomes the 14th team in program history to earn a trip to the NCAA Championship with this being the 10th consecutive season. This also marks the 10th time in school history that both the men and women will compete at the national meet.
The NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17, in Winneconne, Wisconsin hosted by University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Lake Breeze Golf Club. The women's 6K race will begin at 11:15 a.m. (CT), followed by the men's race at 12:15 p.m. (CT).
