Nine Bears Earn All-Region at Midwest Regional

Rock Island, Ill., Nov. 11, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis cross country program scored top-three finishes among the women and men as nine Bears ran to All-Region honors during the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships at Saukie Golf Course Saturday afternoon.

The WashU women placed second with 75 combined points, as University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire scored 59 points to snap the Bears three consecutive regional titles streak. The men placed third with 124 points behind front runner North Central College (34) and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (81).

Sophomore Paige Lawler led the efforts of the WashU women, as the Bears clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a runner-up finish. Lawler led the Bears with a personal-best time of 20:46.4 to place second overall with an average pace of 5:35 per mile. She was one of 13 Bears to post personal best times during the race.

Joining Lawler on the All-Region team were senior Alison Lindsay (21:05.8) who placed seventh, senior Audrey Western (21:22.6) who placed 14th, sophomore Sophie Watterson (21:29.5) who placed 18th and freshman Lara Rix (21:56.4) who placed 34th.

The men were led by senior David O'Gara, as the Glenview, Ill.-native captured fifth place overall with a career-best time of 23:46.9 and an average pace of 4:48 per mile. Also earning All-Region honors were junior Peter Johnsrud (24:10.4) in 20th place, senior Kirby Simon (24:27.1) in 31st place and sophomore Marco Quaroni (24:27.7) in 32nd place. Rounding out the top-five times for the men was sophomore Nick Matteucci (24:30.7).

Lindsay earned All-Region honors for the fourth consecutive season, as she placed within the top-35 times individually dating back to her freshman season. Meanwhile O'Gara and Johnsrud earned their second consecutive All-Region honors.
