Warrenville, Ill., Sept. 20, 2014 – Seniors Lucy Cheadle and Drew Padgett each raced to first-place finishes to lead the Washington University in St. Louis cross country teams at the Wheaton Gil Dodds Invite Saturday. The Washington U. women tied for first in the team standings, while the WUSTL men finished second.
Cheadle led three top-10 finishers for the Washington U. women as the No. 19-ranked Bears scored 45 points to tie for first in the team standings with No. 6 Oberlin College. North Central College (Ill.) finished third with 69 points, while No. 4 University of Chicago was fourth with 87. Padgett led four top-15 finishers for the No. 11 WUSTL men as they scored 59 points to finish second in the team standings. Central College (Iowa), who is ranked No. 5, won the team title with 37 points. No. 20 Chicago and Oberlin finished third and fourth, respectively, with 72 and 82 points.
"Lucy and Drew demonstrated that they will be forces to be reckoned with in November," head coach Jeff Stiles said. "More importantly, both teams executed their race plans very well and affirmed that the teams will be a presence in November as well. We ran well, but definitely have a lot more to prove. It was a perfect early season meet. Our focus is November and today we showed ourselves that we are right on target."
Cheadle clocked a winning time of 21:03 on the 6K course to win the women's race in the field of 212 runners by nearly a minute over the runner-up finisher. The time was also just two seconds off her career-best 6K time. Padgett defeated 224 other runners to win the men's 8K race with a time of 24:47, more than 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
