Cross Country Teams Post Strong Finishes at Greater Louisville Classic, SIUE John Flamer Invite

Louisville, Ky., Oct. 5, 2013 – The Washington University in St. Louis men's cross country team finished fifth in the Gold Division at the Greater Louisville Classic, while the women's team finished 18th Saturday morning. WUSTL also had several runners compete at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville John Flamer Invite, where the men placed third and the women finished fourth.

The Washington U. men had six runners finish in the top half of the field of 269 runners in the Gold Division at the Greater Louisville Classic, where the Bears posted their highest finish in school history. The previous best finish for the WUSTL men at the meet was 13th, and they finished 19th in 2012. The Washington U. men placed third among non-NCAA Division I teams at the meet, behind Canada's University of Guelph and NCAA Division II University of Southern Indiana. Junior Drew Padgett (15th - 24:56.76) and senior Kevin Sparks (16th – 24:57.36) placed 15th and 16th overall, respectively, in the 8K race. The Bears' top-seven runners were in the top-50 of the non-Division I runners in the race.

In the women's Gold Division race at the Greater Louisville Classic, Washington U. improved 10 spots in the overall team standings for the team's 18th-place finish. The Bears were fifth among non-NCAA Division I schools behind Guelph, Canada's University of Western Ontario and NCAA Division II Edinboro University and Southern Indiana. Junior Lucy Cheadle led three runners who placed in the top-150 of the 288-runner race. She finished 31st overall and eighth among non-NCAA Division I runners, with a time of 17:56.30 on the 5K course. Freshman Sarah Curci (79th – 18:34.90) and sophomore Ellen Toennies (139th – 19:09.52) also finished in the top half of the field.

At the SIUE John Flamer Invite, the WUSTL men finished third with 67 points, while the Washington U. women were fourth with 87. The Washington U. men were led by three top-15 finishers in the field of 61 runners on the 8K course – freshman Ryan Becker (eighth – 26:39.63), sophomore Jeff Bonin (11th – 26:46.18) and freshman Ben Rosenkranz (13th – 26:49.74). The WUSTL women had three top-20 finishers out of 59 runners on the 6K course – freshman Ahna Buntrock (13th – 24:17.10), senior Kim Gaspar (17th – 24:31.78) and senior Katy Barron (19th – 24:36.18).
