Malek and Ufondu Chosen as AVCA All-Americans

Senior middle hitter Julianne Malek and senior outside hitter Ifeoma Ufondu of the Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team were named to the 2018 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America teams, as announced by the association on Tuesday.

Malek was named to the AVCA All-America First Team and Ufondu was selected for the AVCA All-America Second Team. The selections marked the 33rd straight season in which a Bear has garnered All-America honors. In total, WashU has had 47 individuals honored and the multiple selections marks the 100th and 101st all-time in program history.

Malek is the 51st AVCA First Team All-America WashU selection, which leads all of Division III. She has the top hitting percentage in Division III with a .438 clip, totaling 355 kills in 649 attempts during 120 sets played. Malek's kills and hitting percentage were career-bests and she concluded her four-years with 1,029 kills, 27th most in program history. She also registered 107 blocks (16 solo) and she is one of just 18 Bears to total more than 250 blocks in her career, ending with 325. Malek also led the Bears from the service line with 50 aces.

Ufondu averaged a career-best 3.37 kills per set, totaling 374 kills in 111 sets played with a .251 hitting percentage. In addition to leading the Bears with 374 kills, she tallied 117 digs, 62 blocks (11 solo) and 13 service aces. Ufondu climbed the WashU all-time leaderboard this season and concluded her career with 1,140 kills which ranks 19th in program history and she also recorded 456 digs, 243 blocks (43 solo) and a .249 hitting percentage.
