St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 9, 2017 – Juniors Julianne Malek and Ifeoma Ufondu of the No. 13-ranked Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team were awarded American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Central Region honors Thursday morning.
Malek, a First-Team All-University Athletic Association honoree, leads the Bears in hitting percentage (.425) and has amassed 336 kills with 60 errors in 649 attempts. The middle hitter also is atop the Bears statistical leaderboard in aces with 40 on the season. Against regionally ranked opponents Malek totaled 110 kills and 31 blocks.
Ufondu, a Second-Team All-UAA selection, leads the Bears in kills with 366 on the year. She is also the only Bear on the year to exceed both 100 kills and 100 digs, as Ufondu has contributed 158 digs. The outside hitter ranks third on the Bears with 78 total blocks. Against regionally ranked opponents, Ufondu averaged 2.86 kills, 1.66 digs and 0.55 blocks per set.
The Bears are scheduled to open the NCAA Tournament, its 31st straight postseason berth, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday against No. 2-ranked Calvin College at Illinois Wesleyan University.
