Oshkosh, Wis., September 9, 2017 – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis volleyball team secured the 100th and 101st victories in head coach Vanessa Walby's time with the Bears, as the Red & Green posted consecutive 3-1 wins over Lawrence University and St. Norbert College Saturday.
WashU improved its record to 5-3, while Lawrence fell to 3-5 and St. Norbert to 2-6. The Bears defeated Lawrence 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-6. The Red & Green had a similar conclusion in the St. Norbert match, falling 25-22 in the first set before posting 25-22, 25-19 and 25-16 victories.
Match 1: WashU 3 – Lawrence 1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-6)
Malek and junior Ifeoma Ufondu combined for 29 kills while committing just five errors. Malek finished the match with a .619 hitting percentage with 15 kills on 21 attempts, while also totaling a career-high five service aces. Freshman Alison Almgren-Bell paced the attack with 24 assists while fellow freshman Kirby Knapp tallied 13 assists.
Match 2: WashU 3 – St. Norbert 1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-16)
The Bears posted a season-high .458 hitting percentage while posting 58 kills compared to just nine errors in 107 attempts. WashU's best single match hitting percentage was recorded on Sept. 10, 1993 for a success rate of .615.
Three members of the WashU lineup exceeded double figures in kills – Ufondu (15), junior Lauren Martin (12) and Malek (11). Malek continued her streak of eight straight matches of reaching double figures in kills.
Ufondu concluded the match with 15 kills compared to just one error in 20 attempts while Malek totaled 11 kills with zero errors in 17 attempts. Ufondu led the team with a .700 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Chloe Stile led the offense with all 40 of the Bears' assists. Martin also totaled two service aces. Freshman Rachel Rhyner (8) and sophomore Leila King (6) contributed 14 kills combined with only one error each.
Defensively, King (three) and Ufondu (three) had three solo blocks each. Baxter once again finished in double digits with 13 digs, increasing her streak to 21 straight matches of reaching double figures.
The Bears stay on the road next weekend when they head to Springfield, Ohio for the Wittenberg Fall Classic. WashU will face multiple programs ranked within the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top-25 including No. 25 Ohio Northern on Friday, Sept. 15.
