Thousand Oaks, Calif., Sept. 10, 2016 – The Washington University in St. Louis volleyball program fell to two nationally ranked programs in six straight sets Saturday evening at the Cal Lu Invitational, including matches against No. 20 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 4 Claremont Mudd-Scripps College.
The Bears (5-5 Overall) also nationally ranked at No. 10, struggled to get much going against the Warhawks and Stags. Sophomores Ifeoma Ufondu and Julianne Malek posted hitting percentages above .400 against Claremont.
Match 1: UW-Whitewater 3 – WashU 0 (19-25, 23-25, 15-25)
Savannah Zhang stepped up for WashU acting as the setter against the No. 20 University of Wisconsin Whitewater Warhawks compiling 16 assists while Zoe Baxter added nine digs, but the Bears dropped three straight sets.
Caroline Dupont once again led the Bears attack with eight kills. She also stood tall at the net defensively with four block assists.
The Bears attack struggled to find the open court often totaling 29 kills and 20 errors in the contest of two nationally ranked programs.
Match 2: Claremont Mudd-Scripps 3 – WashU 0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-18)
Ufondu and Malek combined for 15 kills compared to just two errors. Lauren Fournier finished the match with two service aces.
Natalie Stephanus totaled 22 digs while Baxter added 11 herself. Dupont added another solo block to her season total with three block assists.
