Kalamazoo, Mich., Sept. 19, 2019 – Sophomore Hannah Johnston picked up a pair of singles wins, including an upset victory over the No. 7 seed in the first round, to highlight the Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team at day one of the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships held at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Johnston, who had two wins in her rookie campaign, defeated No. 7 Qingyue Li of the College of Wooster 6-0, 7-5 in the opening round. Johnston trailed 5-0 in the second set before reeling off seven-straight games.
She followed that up with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hannah Cianciola of Denison in the round of 16. Johnston takes on No. 9 seed Leah Newhof Friday at 11:30 a.m. (ET) in the round of 16.
Also advancing to the round of 16 in singles was freshman Leslie Ligier, senior Zoe Park, junior No. 9 seed Ally Persky and sophomore Divya Sharma. WashU posted a 10-2 record on the opening day in singles.
In doubles, WashU advanced both teams to the round of 16. Persky and Ligier, the No. 5 seed, rolled in its first match with an 8-2 win. The duo of senior Sanjna Tripathy and Sharma also posted a victory in the opening round 8-7 (9-4).
