No. 10 WashU Blows Past Rhodes to Win Challenge Cup

Greencastle, Ind. Sept. 15, 2019 – The No. 10-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team handed Rhodes College its first loss of the season and claimed the DePauw Challenge Cup with a 4-0 win Sunday in Greencastle, Ind.

WashU improved to 5-1-1 with the victory, while Rhodes dropped to 5-1.

Senior Taylor Cohen had a goal and an assist in the win to up her career point total to 101. Cohen is the sixth player in school history to record 100 or more points.

Cohen scored in the second minute to give the Bears the early 1-0 lead, and then sophomore Ariana Miles made it 2-0 with a tally in the 20th minute on an assist from Cohen. Junior Kristen Reikersdorfer pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 27th minute.

Sophomore Gabbie Cesarone added a goal in the 61st minute to round out the scoring for WashU.

Junior Emma Greenfield (69:16, two saves) and freshman Katie Stender-Moore (20:44, two saves) split time in net and helped secure the Bears' fourth shutout of the season.

WashU outshot Rhodes 17-6 and the Bears had a 5-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Winners of three-straight contests, WashU hosts No. 6 Wheaton College (Ill.) in a key regional matchup Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 4:30 p.m. The Bears defeated Wheaton 2-1 in the Sectional Championship a year ago in St. Louis.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Rhodes 16-1-1 and has won the last 15 meetings… Cohen moved into fourth place in school history in game-winning goals (14) and sixth in goals (39).
