No. 3 WashU Rebounds with Win over Transy

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 8, 2019 – The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 6-1 victory over Transylvania University Sunday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 3-1-1 with the victory, while Transylvania dropped to 1-2.

Sophomore Marissa Kalkar had a pair of first-half goals for WashU, while junior Ellie DeConinck added a pair of assists.

WashU outshot Transy 24-4 and had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU took a commanding 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the opening nine minutes of play. Freshman Jolie Carl scored just 57 seconds into the contest on a cross from sophomore Erin Flynn, and then sophomore Ariana Miles settled a long cross from junior Ellie Moreland in the ninth minute and fired a shot to far corner.

Kalkar added goals in the 32nd and 45th minute to give WashU the 4-0 advantage at half. The Bears outshot Transy 14-1.

The Bears added two goals in the second half, including the first of freshman Sydney Essler's career in the 63rd minute.

Junior Emma Greenfield (60:00), sophomore Mary Frances West (15:30, one goal allowed) and freshman Katie Stender-Moore (14:30, one save) split time in goal.

WashU takes on DePauw University at the DePauw Challenge Cup in Greencastle, Ind. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 11:30 a.m. (ET).

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU has won the three all-time meetings against Transylvania … The Bears are 44-2-2 at home the past five seasons… Kalkar upped her career total to six goals.
