No. 3 Women’s Soccer Runs Past Calvin in Season Opener

Grand Rapids, Mich., August 30, 2019 – The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 3-0 victory at Calvin College Friday in Grand Rapids, Mich.

WashU scored a pair of goals by sophomores Gabbie Cesarone and Ariana Miles in the opening five minutes of play to jump out to the commanding 2-0 lead.

Cesarone scored the first goal of her career at 2:05 off the Bears' second corner kick of the game. Just two minutes later, the Bears had two shots deflect off the crossbar and then Miles scored on the rebound to make it 2-0.

Junior Ellie DeConinck pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 13th minute. Junior Kristen Reikersdorfer had two assists in the season-opening win.

WashU outshot Calvin 16-10, and the Bears had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Emma Greenfield made three saves and picked up the 22nd shutout of her career.

WashU closes out a two-game road trip at No. 15 Hope College on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 4 p.m. (ET).

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU is 10-0 all-time against Calvin … The Bears are 10-2 in season openers under head coach Jim Conlon… Greenfield moved into a tie for fifth all-time in shutouts.
