Women’s Soccer Opens Season Ranked No. 3


St. Louis, Mo., August 7, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opens the 2019 season ranked No. 3 in the United Soccer CoachesPreseason Top-25 Poll, as announced by the organization.

Head coach Jim Conlon enters his 12th season at WashU with a 190-36-16 (.818) overall record, leading the Bears to 11 NCAA Tournaments and eight University Athletic Association (UAA) titles in his tenure.

WashU returns 17 letterwinners from a year ago, including seven that made at least eight starts. Conlon guided the Bears to a 21-1 overall record a year ago and a trip to the NCAA Division III National Semifinals for the third time in the last four years. The Bears also won their fourth-straight UAA title. 

Senior forward Taylor Cohen was a second-team All-America selection in 2018 after leading the conference with 15 goals and nine assists for 39. She was also first in the UAA and 11th in NCAA Division III with seven game-winning goals. Cohen enters her senior season with 37 goals in 61 career games played.

Junior goalkeeper Emma Greenfield also returns after earning first-team all-region and second-team all-UAA honors a year ago. Greenfield recorded a 21-1 record with a 0.27 goals against average and an NCAA-best 13 shutouts.

Sophomore back Gabbie Cesarone started all 22 games at center back and earned UAA Rookie of the Year and second-team all-conference honors. She was part of the defense that set a single-season school record with six goals allowed in 22 games played, and also tied the team mark with 16 shutouts.

Joining Cesarone on defense is junior Katy Mockett,who started 20 of 21 games played a year ago. Other returning starters include three sophomores: Erin Flynn (five goals, eight assists), Ariana Miles (four goals, six assists) and Jess Shapiro (three goals, one assist).

Also returning for the Bears in 2019 is sophomore forward Marissa Kalkar (three goals, four assists), junior forwards Kristen Reikersdorfer (two goals, one assist) and Ellie DeConinck (two goals, one assist), junior back Ellie Moreland (21 games played) and sophomore midfielder Emily Kaufman (19 games played). 

The Bears will face three teams ranked in the preseason top-25 poll: No. 9 Wheaton (Sept. 18), No. 15 Hope (August 31) and No. 19 St. Thomas (Sept. 7). 

WashU opens the 2019 season at Calvin on Friday, August 30 at 4 p.m. (ET). The Bears take on Greenville on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m. in the home opener.
