Cohen, Cunningham and Dempsey Receive Scholar Honors

St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 11, 2018 – Washington University in St. Louis senior midfielder Darcy Cunningham and junior forward Taylor Cohen were named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Scholar All-America Team, as announced by the Association. 

Cunningham was a repeat selection on the first team, while Cohen picked up second-team accolades. The duo also earned first-team Scholar All-North/Central Region honors, while senior midfielder Caroline Dempsey was named to third team.

Cunningham, a 2018 First-Team United Soccer Coaches All-America selection, started 15 of 18 games played and had seven goals and seven assists for 21 points. She netted three game-winning goals in the regular season, including in a 3-0 win at No. 22 Loras Aug. 31 and in a 2-1 overtime victory vs. Emory Sept. 29. 

Cunningham was third in the UAA in shots (69), fourth in assists, fifth in points and seventh in goals. She had 20 career goals and 24 assists for 64 points, and ranks sixth in school history in assists.

Cunningham has a 3.46 grade point average while majoring in marketing. She is a two-time Academic All-UAA, Scholar All-North/Central Region and Scholar All-America selection.

Cohen, a 2018 Second-Team United Soccer Coaches All-America selection, started all 22 games and led the conference with 15 goals and nine assists for 39 points. She was also first in the UAA and 11th in Division III with seven game-winning goals.

Cohen had four goals and two assists in the NCAA Tournament, including three game-winners. She has a 3.38 grade point average while majoring in marketing and business of sports.

Dempsey started 22 games in the midfield and had three goals and three assists for nine points. She scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over No. 15 Wheaton in the Sectional Championship. Dempsey was also named the UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week on Nov. 18 and UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week on Dec. 2.

She started 61 of 82 career games played, and had nine goals and nine assists for 27 points. Dempsey was a three-time Academic all-UAA honoree, with a 3.54 grade point average while majoring in environmental policy.

Cunningham and Cohen will be acknowledged for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom at the All-America Ceremony & Reception on Jan. 12, 2019 at McCormick Place West in Chicago in conjunction with the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Convention.

To be named to the Scholar All-America or All-Region Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) throughout her career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; and be nominated by an institution that is a current College Services member.
