Clayton, Mo., Sept. 20, 2018 – Senior Jessica Kovach scored two goals to lead the No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team to a 4-0 win at Fontbonne University Thursday in the Wydown Showdown at Gay Field in Clayton, Mo.
WashU improved to 8-0 with the win, while Fontbonne fell to 2-5-1. WashU is off to an 8-0 start for the first time since 2014, and for the fourth time in school history.
The Bears controlled the entire contest outshooting Fontbonne 34-0 and did not allow a shot on goal for the sixth time this season. WashU also had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU outshot Fontbonne 16-0 in the opening half, but could only find the back of the net on one occasion. In the 16thminute, Flynn sent a cross into the box that Cohen bicycled and then Kovach volleyed into the net.
Sophomore Ellie DeConinck set up the second goal of the contest in the 70thminute when she beat a defender down the left side and sent a cross in that Flynn booted into an open net.
Kovach made it 3-0 in the 83rdminute with a left-footed shot from 20 yards out, and then senior Isabelle Tamburro scored off a cross from freshman Ariana Miles in the 89thminute to round out the scoring.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Greenfield improved to 8-0 and the Bears' defense recorded their seventh shutout of the season, which leads NCAA Division III.
WashU returns to action at Webster University (7-1) on Wednesday, Sept. 26, Game time is set for 6 p.m. at St. Louis Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
