St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 8, 2017 – The No. 2 ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team scored early and often in a 6-0 win over the University of Rochester Sunday in University Athletic Association (UAA) at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU ran its unbeaten streak to 26 games and improved to 11-0-1, 2-0 in the UAA, while Rochester fell to 6-4-1, 0-2 in the UAA.
The six goals scored in a UAA contest for WashU is the most since Oct. 31, 1998, when the Bears won at Case Western Reserve University 6-1.
Sophomore Taylor Cohen scored two goals to increase her conference-leading total to 12, while junior Jessica Ridderhoff added a goal and an assist in the victory. The Bears outshot Rochester 33-4, including 17-1 in the second half.
In the 27th minute, Cohen pushed the advantage to 2-0 after she scored on her own rebound. WashU outshot Rochester 16-3 in the first half, led by junior Darcy Cunningham's six shots. Cunningham nearly scored the third goal of the game on a shot that went off the far post and out of bounds.
In the 53rd minute, Cunningham took a cross and just missed making it 3-0 when her header went off the bottom of the post.
Ridderhoff found the back of the net in the 63rd minute with a left- footed shot that deflected off the post into the back of the net, and then she assisted on Cohen's second goal of the game in the 64th minute.
Freshman Emma Greenfield (one save, 70:30), sophomore Katy Hutson (19:30) and the WashU backline allowed one shot on goal and zero corner kicks to preserve the ninth shutout of the season. Greenfield has allowed just one goal in 650 minutes played this season.
WashU hosts Case Western Reserve (5-7, 0-2 UAA) on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m.
