St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 20, 2017 – The No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a 5-0 win over Fontbonne University in the Wydown Showdown Wednesday at Francis Field.
The Bears improved to 7-0 with the win and ran its unbeaten streak to 21 games dating back to last season, while Fontbonne dropped its second-straight contest and fell to 1-6.
Sophomore Katy Hutson (60:00, one save) and freshman Emma Greenfield (30:00, one save) combined to record the fourth-straight shutout in goal for WashU. The Bears outshot Fontbonne 21-6, and each team had five corner kicks.
Cunningham scored on a give-and-go from Cohen in the third minute to put WashU up 1-0. Cohen netted her team-leading seventh goal in the 11th minute when she finished a cross from junior Caroline Dempsey.
Hutson made a diving save off a shot from Karlie Peth in the 13th minute to keep Fontbonne off the scoreboard.
Freshman Ellie Deconinck scored in the 46th and 51st minute to push the lead to 4-0. Sophomore Jesse Rubin assisted on both goals. Senior Elise Brown headed home a corner from junior Audrey Freeman in the 76th minute to round out the scoring.
WashU hosts Wheaton College (3-3-1) on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Fontbonne, 20-0 … Cohen leads the UAA in goals and points (16) … The goal for Cunningham was the 10th of her career.
