St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 7, 2017 – The No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Rose-Hulman Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Thursday evening in the 2017 home opener at Francis Field.
After a scoreless first half, junior Caroline Dempsey found the back of the net at the 49:02 mark. Dempsey received a pass from junior Hannah Menard just outside the box, turned and fired a shot over the head of goalkeeper Carli Weinberg.
With the Bears continuing to attack, senior Rachel Mickelson added the insurance goal in the 73rd minute. Senior Gillian Myers lofted a pass 40 yards to the left wing to Mickelson, who settled, and then scored from 20 yards out with a shot over the outstretched arms of Weinberg.
Freshman goalkeeper Emma Greenfield (1-0) picked up the win in goal for the Bears. WashU outshot Rose-Hulman 39-0 and had a 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU hosts No. 10-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (1-1) on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m. The game will be played at Gay Field on the campus of Clayton High School in Clayton, Mo. Live stats will be available at washubears.com.
