No. 2 Women’s Soccer Wins Home Opener vs. Aurora

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 9, 2016 – The No. 2-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team won its 2016 home opener with a 1-0 victory over Aurora University Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 3-0 with the win, while Aurora fell to 1-2.

Senior goalkeeper Lizzy Crist and the Bears' defense allowed one shot on goal en route to their third-straight shutout. WashU outshot Aurora 25-1 for the game.

The Bears did not waste any time as sophomore Caroline Dempsey headed home a cross from senior Lexie Sprague in the sixth minute to make it 1-0. The goal for Dempsey was the first of her career.

Dempsey nearly made it 2-0 in the 12th minute when her shot from outside the 18 deflected off the crossbar and remained in play. WashU outshot Aurora 9-0 in the first half.

WashU had another run-in with the crossbar in the 56th minute after sophomore Mariana Alisio's shot from 20 yards out was denied. In the 60th minute, WashU put together a set piece that senior Megan Nicklay's shot was blocked by Aurora goalkeeper Caitlin deRuiter.

WashU hosts No. 11-ranked Calvin College Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU has won all four-time meetings with Aurora … The Bears are off to a 3-0 start for the fifth time in the last six seasons … The game was delayed 30 minutes in the second half due to lightning … The shutout for Crist was the 20th of her career, tied for sixth most in school history.
