St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 4, 2015 – The No. 7-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 2-0 shutout win over the University of Rochester Sunday at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU extended its winning streak to seven games and improved to 9-1, 1-0 in the UAA, while Rochester fell to 4-4-1, 0-1 in the UAA.
Junior Lizzy Crist posted the Bears' fifth shutout of the season in goal making four saves. WashU outshot Rochester 14-8 in the contest.
"We really want to lock it down in the back with the four defenders and try to not allow any shots," said Crist, who improved to 9-1 in goal.
The Bears controlled the first half of play shooting the Yellowjackets 6-3. WashU found the back of the net in the 27th minute after junior Katie Chandler finished off a cross from sophomore Megan Renken. The goal for Chandler was her third of the season and 20th of her career.
WashU pushed the advantage to 2-0 in the 41st minute when freshman Darcy Cunningham redirected a cross from freshman Caroline Dempsey into the net. The goal for Cunningham was also her third of the season.
WashU opens a four-game road trip Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Principia College. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Elsah, Ill.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Rochester, 15-10-2, and has not lost to the Yellowjackets since 2005 … The Bears are 18-5-4 all-time in UAA openers, including a 6-0-2 mark under Conlon … WashU is 6-0 at home this year.
