St. Louis, Mo., October 18, 2013 – The No. 2 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team remained undefeated in University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 2-0 win over Case Western Reserve University Friday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Washington U. improves to 12-1 and 3-0 in UAA play, while Case Western Reserve falls to 7-6-1, 0-2-1 in conference action. The Bears host the University of Rochester Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the final home game of the 2013 regular season. Prior to the contest, Washington U. will honor its eight seniors - Darcy Banco, Becky Berels, Kate Doyle, Rachel Ing, Jessica Johnson, Jen Reed, Lauren Steimle and Anna Zambricki.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amy French made four saves in the win as Washington U. posted its 11th shutout of the season. French improved to 11-1 on the season with a 0.18 goals against average. The Bears have outscored their opponents 49-2 in the first 13 games of the season.
Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the opening 20 minutes of play, but a misplay on a cross by Washington U. led to the first goal of the game. Banco sent a cross into the box that was deflected by a Case defender and not out of the box. Freshman Katie Chandler corralled the loose ball and beat Case goalkeeper Abbey Smith to make it 1-0 at the 26:15 mark. The goal for Chandler was her fourth of the season, and first since August 31.
Washington University outshot Case Western Reserve, 11-6, in the opening half, and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. French made two saves in the opening half for Washington U.
The Bears continued to put the pressure on the Spartans early in the second half, and found the net in the 76th minute after Berels sent a cross into the box that sophomore Olivia Lillegraven finished to make it 2-0. The goal for Lillegraven was her conference best ninth of the season, while Berels' assist was her UAA-leading ninth of the season.
Washington U. outshot Case, 24-10, for the game and had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Smith had seven saves in the loss for Case Western Reserve.
Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Case Western Reserve, 23-2, and the Bears have won the last 20 meetings … The Bears have a 14-game UAA unbeaten streak dating back to the 2011 season … Washington U. is 7-1 at home in 2013, and have a 54-9-3 (.841) record in the past six seasons under head coach Jim Conlon.
