Normal, Ill., April 14, 2018 – The No. 6-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team fired an opening round 319 at the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling and sits in fourth place among 18 teams competing on the Ironwood Golf Course Saturday afternoon.
The Bears are 10-strokes off the lead as host and No. 25-ranked Illinois Wesleyan shot a 309. Also ahead of WashU are No. 15-ranked Huntingdon (314) and No. 12-ranked DePauw (318).
Sophomore Samantha Haubenstock led WashU with a four-over par 76, which is tied for second out of 100 golfers. She posted birdies on two par-5's on the front nine.
Senior Erin Drolet posted a first round 80, while freshman Gigi Garcia totaled 81 strokes. Rounding out the Bears lineup were sophomore Emily Carnes (82) and junior Hanna Jia (88). Drolet and Carnes both finished round one with birdies.
