Springfield, Ill., April 19, 2015 – The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team fired a 317 on day two to rally from a three-stroke deficit to win the University of Illinois-Springfield Spring Invite held Saturday-Sunday at Piper Glen Golf Course in Springfield, Ill.
Senior Olivia Lugar shot a 1-over 73 on the final day to earn medalist honors for the fifth time this season and a school-record 14th time in her career. Lugar, the fifth-ranked player in NCAA Division III, fired a two-day total of 151 (78-73) to post a three-stroke victory over junior Connie Zhou.
Zhou, the fourth-ranked player in Division III, shot a 154 (77-77) to record her 10th-straight top-five finish. Sophomore Jessica Wibawa also recorded a top-15 finish with a two-day total of 169 (85-84) to tie for 13th place.
"I really struggled around the greens Saturday. I would miss a green and be unable to get up and down, so today when I warmed up I spent some time chipping," Lugar said. "It paid off, and today I did a much better job getting up and down."
In a field that featured five NCAA Division II teams, WashU posted a two-day total of 639 (322-317) to outlast day one leader University of Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles fired a two-day score of 651 (319-332) to place second, while Illinois-Springfield (669), Drury University (670), Maryville University (677) and St. Joseph's College (716) rounded out the six-team field.
"As a team, we went in knowing it could rain, but we focused on being deliberate and learning from what we did yesterday," Lugar added. "Everyone did a great job of managing themselves in the tough conditions."
Washington U. concludes the 2014-15 regular season Tuesday, April 28, at the IWU-WUSTL Dual in Springfield, Ill.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU entered the tournament with a 311.11 average … Lugar led the field in Par 4 scoring (4.30) and tied with Zhou for the lead in Par 5 scoring (5.00) … Lugar also led the field in birdies (five), while Zhou was first in pars (24).
