No. 3 WashU Women’s Golf Ties School Record in Arizona

Peoria, Ariz., March 14, 2015 – The No. 3-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team tied a single-round school record with a seven-over 291 as the Bears sit in second place at the George Fox Westbrook Invitational held Saturday at Westbrook Village Golf Club in Peoria, Ariz.

All five starters broke 80 as Washington U. tied a school record previously set during the 2011-12 season at the Millikin Fall Classic. WashU is two strokes back of host and No. 5-ranked George Fox University, who shot a five-over 289 in the opening round. No. 1-ranked University of Texas-Tyler is third after an opening round 301 (+17).

"I'm very excited for the team to be able to play so well while we're on Spring Break," said seventh-year head coach Sean Curtis. "It's a different schedule this year with two tournaments instead of one."

Senior Olivia Lugar carded a school-record five-under 66 on the opening day, and has a one-shot lead over Sydney Maluenda of George Fox. Lugar shattered the previous school record of 69 set by Hannah Buck during the 2011-12 season. She shot a two-under 34 on the front and had a three-under 32 on the back, with a total of six birdies on the day.

"I got into a rhythm where I had one swing. I thought about keeping a compact swing and staying focused on every shot. It was really energizing to see good swings turn into good numbers." Lugar said. "The team went out strong and put some great scores together. We are very excited about playing so well in our second tournament of the season, and we are going to try and keep the momentum going tomorrow."

Junior Connie Zhou fired a two-over 73 in the opening round and sits in a tie for 13th place. Freshman Erin Drolet (+4, 75, 16th place), junior Erin Lawrence (+6, 77, 22nd place) and sophomore Jessica Wibawa (+7, 78, 24th place) also made the start for Washington U. Sophomore Samantha Han competed as an individual and shot a seven-over 78 and is tied for 24th place.

"Olivia crushed it today," Curtis added. "I'm very happy for her and I know the team is as well. She has been a tremendous player for us and a huge influence on our program."

The final round of the George Fox Westbrook Invitational will conclude with 18 holes Sunday.
