Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., May 13, 2014 – The No. 1-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team rebounded from a slow start to shoot a 328 (+40) to sit in a tie for sixth place after day one of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship held at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
No. 9 Rhodes College shot an opening round 311 (+23) on day one to take the overall team lead, while No. 2 Methodist College is 10 shots back after a 321 (+33). No. 6 University of Mary-Hardin Baylor (325), No. 7 Ithaca College (326) and No. 3 University of Texas-Tyler (327) round out the top-five of the 21 teams competing. Lisa Calcasola of Ithaca fired a three-over 75 to hold a one-stroke lead in the individual standings.
"We tried to avoid the slow start. There were some nerves and some expectations and I think it showed," said sixth-year head coach Sean Curtis. "I thought we did a good job getting it back together. We settled down and started playing our game."
Sophomore Connie Zhou was the lone player to break 80 in the opening round for Washington U., firing a six-over 78 to tie for 11th place. Zhou, who entered the NCAA Championship ranked No. 7 in scoring (76.85), is three shots off the individual lead. She fired a 39 on the front nine with birdies on No. 7 and No. 9, and followed with seven pars on the back nine to finish with a 39.
Washington U. continues play on Wednesday with 18 holes beginning at 7:45 a.m. (ET). The Bears are paired up with Methodist and Texas-Tyler for the second-straight day.
Bear Notebook: In five trips to the NCAA Championship, the Bears have averaged a 336.6 on the opening day … The 328 was the second lowest on day one in school history … Zhou has broke 80 in four-straight rounds in the NCAA Championship … Washington U.'s sixth-place finish after day one is the best start in school history at the NCAA Championship for the Bears.
