Olivia Lugar Claims Medalist Honors at No. 1 Women’s Golf Wins IWU Spring Fling
Normal, Ill., April 13, 2014 – Junior Olivia Lugar mounted a late charge on the back nine with four birdies as the No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis women's golf team captured the 2014 Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling held Saturday-Sunday at Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill.
The tournament championship for Washington U. is there fifth of the season and 20th in six seasons as a varsity program. The single-season school record for wins in a season is six, set in 2011-12.
Washington U. fired a 303 on the second day and finished the two-day tournament with a 622, three shots ahead of No. 8 and second-place DePauw University (625). The Tigers shot a tournament-low 300 on day two after an opening round 325.
Illinois Wesleyan, who led for most of day two, was third (322-304, 626), and No. 23 University of Wisconsin-Stout (334-320, 654) and No. 20 Gustavus Adolphus College (331-329, 660) rounded out the top five in the 18-team field. As a team, Washington U. was first in par 3 scoring (3.30) and par 5 scoring (5.35), and third in par 4 scoring (4.50).
Lugar captured medalist honors after firing a two-day total of 150 (78-72), tying with Illinois Wesleyan's Katie Klosterman for top honors. The individual title for Lugar was her third of the season and ninth of her career, tying her with assistant coach Hannah Buck for the most tournament wins in school history with nine.
After firing a four-over 40 on the front nine with four bogeys, Lugar opened the back nine with three-straight birdies on No. 10, No. 11 and No. 12 to get back into contention. She birdied the 446-yard par 5 No. 17, and then recorded a par on No. 18 to finish with an even-par 72. Lugar finished the tournament first in par 4 scoring (+2) and second in Par 5 scoring (even).
Sophomore Connie Zhou rebounded from an 82 on day one for a one-over 73 on day two to finish in fifth place with a two-day score of 155. Zhou had five birdies on day two and shot an even-par 36 on the back nine. Freshman Xin Fang also had a top-10 finish with a two-day score of 156 (79-77), finishing one shot behind Zhou. Fang has finished in the top-10 in eight of nine tournaments in her rookie campaign.
Washington U. concludes the 2013-14 regular season Tuesday, April 29, at the IWU-WUSTL Dual in Springfield, Ill.
