St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 31, 2019 –The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team was announced as the No.-24 ranked team in D3hoops.com preseason poll, the website announced on Monday.
The Bears also picked up a No. 16 ranking in the WBCA NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll today.
WashU return seven letterwinners and four student-athletes that averaged 10 minutes of action during the 2018-19 season.
Senior post player Kristina Schmelter returns for the Bears after averaging 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 17.4 minutes of action.
Sophomore guard Isabelle Hren looks to handle the rock for WashU after appearing in 25 contests last season. She tallied 72 points, 61 rebounds, 39 assists, 16 steals and eight blocks.
Sophomore forward Samantha Weaver also returns for the Bears after averaging 5.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 27 games in her first season on the Danforth Campus.
Head coach Randi Henderson is in her third season at the helm of the Bears with a 41-15 record. In 2018-19, Henderson guided the Bears to a 13-1 mark in University Athletic Association action and advanced to the NCAA Tournament sectional finals with a 22-7 overall record. Henderson was named D3hoops.comCentral Region Coach of the Year and her staff was honored as the University Athletic Association (UAA) Coaching Staff of the Year.
The Bears open the 2019-20 slate at the Loras College Tipoff Tournament on Friday, Nov. 15 against tournament host Loras at 6 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa. WashU could face either UW-Oshkosh or Augustana in either the consolation or championship game the following day.
The Bears home opener will be against Rhodes College on Friday, Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.
WashU's UAA opener is set for Saturday, Jan. 11 at University of Chicago with tip set for 1 p.m.
