St. Louis, Mo., July 17, 2014 – Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball coach Nancy Fahey and assistant coach John Patterson accepted the #Chillin4Charity Cold Water Challenge Thursday. Carol Simon of Brandeis University called out Fahey for the challenge.
Fahey and Patterson were each soaked by a cooler of ice-cold water to help raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which helps raise awareness for breast cancer and funds research.
Coaches around the country are calling out their peers to participate with $50 going to the foundation for each head coach and $25 for each assistant. If a coach chooses not to take the challenge, they should donate to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. If the selected coach does rise to the challenge, the coach who called on them should donate the money.
Fahey called out DePauw University women's basketball coach Kris Huffman, while Patterson challenged Rhodes College women's basketball coach Matt Dean.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was named for the former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987. She passed away Jan. 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. Since its inception, the fund has raised $8 million and allocated $3.8 million for women's cancer research.
