St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 12, 2013 – Washington University in St. Louis junior forward Melissa Gilkey was named to the 2014 D3Hoops.com Women's Basketball Preseason All-America Second Team, as announced by the website.
Gilkey, who was a 2013 All-America honorable mention selection by D3Hoops.com, Women's DIII News and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), was one of two University Athletic Association (UAA) players to receive 2014 Preseason All-America recognition. University of Rochester junior guard Ally Zywicki was selected to the honorable mention.
Gilkey has started all 56 games in her first two seasons, and was a D3Hoops.com first-team all-Central Region and first-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honoree last season. She led Washington U. with 15.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game a year ago. Gilkey recorded seven double-doubles and scored in double figures in 25 of 28 games in 2012-13, topping the 20-point mark seven times. She enters her junior season ranked ninth on the Washington University career blocks leaderboard (67) and 10th on the career free-throw percentage list (73.9).
The Bears open the 2013-14 season with five games on the road, beginning with a 1 p.m. (ET) contest at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky., Saturday, Nov. 16. Washington U. travels to tournaments at Wisconsin Lutheran College (Nov. 22-23) and DePauw (Nov. 30-Dec. 1) before hosting the McWilliams Classic Dec. 6-7 at the WU Field House.
