WashU Sweeps UAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Atlanta, Ga., April 28, 2019 – A pair of University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships is what the Washington University in St. Louis outdoor track & field program secured Sunday evening in Atlanta, the 248th and 249th overall in university history at WashU, as both the nationally ranked women and men finished with sizeable point differentials between the Bears and the second place finishers.

The No. 6-ranked women totaled 233.5 points while No. 23 Chicago placed second with 156.5 points. Emory (149), Case Western Reserve (110) and Carnegie Mellon (85) rounded out the top-five point totals at the conclusion of the two-day championship.

The No. 8-ranked men scored 232 points to finish ahead of Carnegie Mellon (168). Case Western Reserve (123), Chicago (77) and New York (73) finished in the top-five.

The Bears totaled seven UAA event titles on Sunday, five by the men and two by the women while altogether posting 29 all-UAA finishes on the final day of competition.

MEN
Senior Jason Singer, sophomore Andrew Whitaker, senior Eddie Wintergalen and sophomore John Harry Wagner claimed the 4x400m relay event title with the fastest time in UAA Championship history. The Bears combined for a time of 3:15.10. Whitaker set a personal-best in the 110m hurdles during a first place finish time of 14.87.

Junior Nick Matteucci won a pair of event titles including the 1,500m (3:52.95) and 800m (1:54.26). Senior Brad Hodkinson finished with a winning time of 14:56.16 in the 5,000m run.

WOMEN

Senior Heidi Nassos earned her second event title in as many days when she posted a personal-best 11.97m distance in the triple jump. Sophomore Caira Watson Haynes won the 100m hurdles after leading the competitors Saturday in prelims. She posted a winning time of 14.42.
