WashU T&F Men’s 1600m Relay Shatters School Record

Waverly, Iowa, March 2, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis track & field program traveled to the Wartburg Qualifier to compete in the two-day event starting Friday with hopes of securing better positioning for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

The WashU men's 4x400m relay team of senior Jason Singer, senior Eddie Wintergalen, sophomore Andrew Whitaker and sophomore John Harry Wagner shattered the previous school record set less than a month prior. The group ran to a first place finish and shaved more than two seconds off the school record with a time of 3:16.27. The Bears currently have the fastest time in Division III this season with the most recent result.

Wintergalen also posted a third place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 49.07. He currently sits in 11th place in DIII.

On Friday, the women's distance medley relay consisting of sophomore Emily Stegmeier, freshman Ava Forman, freshman Grace Bristow and senior Molly Shepherd far exceeded a seed time of 12:15.10. The group dropped more than 18 seconds of the time and finished the race in 11:57.02 to earn second place and post the 12th fastest time in NCAA Division III so far this season.

Also competing in the DMR was a group of senior Abby Martin, sophomore Rachel Novick, sophomore Sophie Grigaux and junior Sophie Watterson. The tandem crossed the finsh line in 12:00.03 which was also a top-20 time in DIII this year.

The women's 4x400m relay team of freshman Alicia Gupte, sophomore Sophie Grigaux, Forman and Novick placed sixth in a time of 3:55.77. It is a season-best time and ranks in 13th of DIII.

Senior Heidi Nassos took first in pole vault nearly matching a season-best height as she cleared 3.91m. She already possesses the top mark in Division III this season.

Likewise, sophomore Caira Watson Haynes posted the top 60m hurdles time of 8.95 at the meet but already ran to a fastest time this year which ranks eighth in DIII.
