St. Louis, Mo., April 1, 2014 – Washington University in St. Louis junior Lucy Cheadle was selected as the NCAA Division III National Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as announced by the organization.
Cheadle set Washington University stadium and school records on her way to winning the women's 3,000 steeplechase at the WU Invitational Saturday. She finished the race in 10:29.58, which was nearly 45 seconds ahead of the runner-up from NCAA Division II Truman State University. Cheadle's time was more than 12 seconds faster than her previous career-best and broke the school record of 10:40.00 set by Sarah Fisher in 2012. It also set a Bushyhead Track stadium record, bettering the previous time of 10:42.14 set in 2009. Cheadle ranks first in NCAA Division III in the event, and is nearly 15 seconds faster than the second-ranked time this season.
