Van Cleave Earns 2nd UAA Event Title During Day 3 of Competition

Chicago, Ill., Feb. 15, 2019 – During the third day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships the Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving teams combined for seven all-UAA finishes Friday evening including senior Kevin Van Cleave's second event title of the week.

The No. 6-ranked WashU men remain in second place as it pulled away from the rest of the pack with its current total of 995.5 points. The No. 9-ranked WashU women also remained in fourth place and have totaled 764 points.

Van Cleave won the 100 breaststroke as he touched the wall in 55.32 after posting a season-best B cut time in the prelims (55.18). Freshman Nathan Katz posted a season-best and B cut time in the 400 IM by placing second. He finished the event in 3:56.93. Junior Jerry Chen also earned all-UAA honors by placing third in the 100 backstroke (49.70).

The Bears men also had two all-UAA finishes in relays. The 200 medley relay placed third with a time of 1:29.77 behind the efforts of Chen, Van Cleave, senior Andrew Pek and junior Chase Van Patten. Van Cleave combined efforts with freshman Rick Reinhard, freshman Jack Smithson and junior Michael Perry to place third in the 800 freestyle with a B cut and season-best time, 6:43.32.

Junior Mollie Seidner led the women with a third place finish in the 200 freestyle. She swam to a season-best time which also met the NCAA Division III B cut standards with a time of 1:51.94.

She also helped the 200 medley relay team to an all-UAA finish. Seidner combined with the group of freshman Kiki Bonetta-Misteli, junior Stephanie Li and senior Lauren Sapp swam to a B cut finish and season-best 1:44.14.
