WashU S&D Closes Out Home Schedule with Solid Senior Day

St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 26, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving program hosted Division I Illinois State and D-III's No. 25-ranked Wabash College Saturday afternoon in the Millstone Pool on senior day, defeating the Little Giants 172.5-107.5 and narrowly falling short to the D-I Redbirds 156-142.

The No. 5-ranked WashU men swam to 11 first place finishes, while the No. 8-ranked WashU women claimed seven top placements out of 16 events competed in.

Prior to the meet, seniors Charlie Brickner, Max Cardwell, Maggie Cox, Jason Hsu, Brooke Ivey, Brandon Lum, Emily Mansour, Michael Matthews, Andrew Pek, Lauren Sapp, Kevin Van Cleave and Jordan Wheeler were honored for their contributions to the Bears over the past four seasons in which both the men's and women's programs have finishes in the top-10 for three consecutive seasons.

MEN

Van Cleave and Lum swam to a pair of NCAA B Cut times during senior day. Van Cleave posted a time of 56.10 in the 100 breaststroke to take first place, while Lum had a winning time of 1:48.36 in the 200 butterfly. Both Van Cleave and Lum also swam the fastest times in the 200 IM (1:55.03) and 100 butterfly (49.67) respectively.

The Bears opened the swim meet with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. Junior Peyton Wilson, sophomore Matthew Yang, junior James Hardy and junior Chase Van Patten recorded a time of 1:33.99.

Top times also came in the 1,000 freestyle by freshman Rick Reinhard (9:51.91), 500 freestyle by Reinhard (4:43.93), 100 backstroke by freshman Barclay Dale (51.36), one-meter dive by Matthew Grottkau (213.60), 100 freestyle by Van Patten (46.77), 200 backstroke by Wheeler (1:56.39), 50 freestyle by Van Patten (21.68) while freshman Michael Jia tallied the best time during an exhibition swim (21.64).

WOMEN

Junior Mollie Seidner swam to a pair of top finishes individually while also assisting in the meet's opening 200 medley relay win. She clocked the fastest times in the 50 freestyle (24.55) and the 100 freeystle (53.38) in addition to the winning 200 medley relay time of 1:47.51. Seidner teamed with sophomore Elle Pollitt, junior Stephanie Li and Sapp.

Sapp also claimed first in the 200 freestyle (1:57.43) while Li had a first and second place finish in the 200 (2:23.21) and 100 (1:05.55) breaststroke.

As the Bears celebrated the accomplishments of the five senior women, a pair of first year women posted top times in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Freshman Kiki Bonetta-Misteli swam to a winning time of 59.32 in the 100 backstroke as freshman Stephanie Bowater posted the top 100 butterfly time of 1:00.28.
