WashU S&D Splits With Nationally Competitive DII Truman State

Kirksville, Mo., Jan. 20, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming and diving program split a dual meet on the road against Division II Truman State Sunday afternoon, with the men posting a 170-85 victory and the women falling just short by a score of 133-129.

The No. 5-ranked WashU men totaled 10 first place efforts to defeat the Bull Dogs. The No. 8-ranked WashU women finished a mere four points behind Division II's 23rd ranked program, splitting first place efforts evenly out of 14 events.

MEN: WashU 170 – Truman State 85

Senior Brandon Lum claimed first place finishes in both butterfly distances for the men finishing the 200 butterfly in 1:49.57 and the 100 fly in 50.49. He also teamed up with junior Jerry Chen, sophomore Matthew Yang and sophomore Preston Bailey for a winning time of 1:33.56 in the meet's opening event – the 200 medley relay.

In addition, senior Kevin Van Cleave also swam to first place finishes in both breaststroke events. He posted a strong time of 56.29 in the 100 breast while also claiming first in the 200 breast (2:05.66).

Chen also swam to a winning time in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall in 51.87, less than a tenth of a second ahead of junior teammate Peyton Wilson. Wilson posted the top 200 backstroke time, 1:53.02.

WashU's freshmen dominated the distance freestyle events as Jack Smithson took first in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:45.78 and Rick Reinhard placing first in the 500 freestyle (4:47.63).

Junior Chase Van Patten posted a winning time of 21.54 in the 50 freestyle.

WOMEN: Truman State 133 – WashU 129

Sophomore Elle Pollitt demonstrated versatility by taking first in the 200 IM (2:12.39) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.23) individually before helping the Bears close out the afternoon's meet with a winning 1:42.03 time in the 200 freestyle relay. Freshman Grace Carey, sophomore Katie Cardwell and sophomore Sabrina Baxamusa swam the opening three legs of the winning 200 free relay.

Senior Lauren Sapp sprinted to first place times in the 50 and 100 freestyle. She finished about three tenths of a second in front of the runner up in the 50 free (24.87). Sapp followed with a winning time of 54.18 in the 100 free, which was more than half of a second ahead of the next competitor.

Junior Stephanie Li posted top times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. She was more than a second ahead of the Bulldog runner up in the 100 breast (1:06.25) and then more than four seconds ahead of the runner up in the 200 breast (2:23.24).
