Bears Selected as Top-10 Swim & Dive Teams in CSCAA Poll

St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 17, 2018 – The Washington University in St. Louis swimming & diving program had both the women's and men's teams listed in the Top-10 of the initial 2018-19 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) NCAA Division III national poll.

The WashU women were listed seventh, while the men opened the year in the 10th slot. Last season's national champions open the year as the teams to beat with Emory listed first on the women's side and Denison No. 1 on the men's side.

CSCAA Rankings

The University Athletic Association (UAA) had more than half of its programs listed in the Top-25 poll. The top women's teams listed in the UAA are: Emory (1), WashU (7), New York (8), Carnegie Mellon (10), Chicago (11) and Case Western Reserve (21). The top men's teams listed in the UAA are: Emory (3), NYU (6), Chicago (9), WashU (10) and Carnegie Mellon (11).

The WashU men currently feature 28 top-10 swimming times, including the top times for six events: junior Jerry Chen in the 100 backstroke (50.78), senior Brandon Lum in the 100 butterfly (49.92) and senior Kevin Van Cleave in the 100 breaststroke (56.13) and 200 IM (1:53.10).

The men also have the fastest 200 medley relay (1:32.85) and the 400 medley relay (3:21.62). Chen, Van Cleave and Lum were joined by junior Chase Van Patten in the 400 medley relay, while Van Cleave was joined by freshman Barclay Dale and seniors Andrew Pek and Michael Matthews in the 200 medley relay.

The WashU women possess 17 top-10 times this year in 11 events. Freshman Grace Carey posted Division III's fastest 50 freestyle (24.13) during the Bears opening leg of the 200 freestyle relay against Saint Louis University on Sept. 28.

Sophomore Elle Pollitt also posted the second fastest 100 freestyle time this year (53.36) and helped the women's 400 freestyle relay (3:36.15) and 400 medley relay (3:59.01) to the second fastest times. Pollitt and Carey were members of both relays as freshman Abby Wilson and junior Mollie Seidner contributed to the 400 freestyle relay and sophomore Ella Needler and junior Stephanie Li swam the opening legs of the 400 medley relay.

Additionally the women have the second fastest 200 freestyle relay time of 1:36.93, which was swam by Carey, senior Lauren Sapp, sophomore Sabrina Baxamusa and Seidner.
