St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 3, 2016 – Washington University in St. Louis was awarded all four University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week honors in swimming and diving, as announced Monday afternoon.
Junior swimmers Niamh O'Grady and Ross Brown were joined by divers Emily Ramos and Ryan Nathenson after excelling for the Bears during the home opening meet against Division I Saint Louis University. O'Grady and Ramos helped lead the Bears to a 130-109 victory while Brown and Nathenson won multiple events for the men's side that fell just short, 116-107.
O'Grady won three events for WashU swimming during its home opening victory over St. Louis. O'Grady won the 200 individual medley (2:08.92) and 100 butterfly (58.23) while combining with teammates MariMac Collins, Alex Center and Lauren Sapp for the 200 freestyle relay victory with a time of 1:38.54. This is O'Grady's second time winning the UAA honor.
Brown was crucial in the Bears 200 medley relay victory over SLU, as he posted a time of 21-flat as the final leg of the relay touching the wall with a WashU time of 1:35.55 which narrowly edged the runner-ups time of 1:35.89. Brown teamed up with Kevin Van Cleave, Reese Frerichs and Andrew Pek for the win. He also won the 50 free with a time of 21.79, finishing 0.03 seconds ahead of SLU's top swimmer. This is Brown's first UAA weekly award.
Ramos posted scores of 223.2 and 200.17 for first place finishes to open the season on top, while Nathenson finished the day with 216.97 and 189.07 as the lone diver during the men's competition. Ramos earns the UAA honor for the third time in her career while Nathenson earns the distinction for the fourth time.
