Walsh Leads WashU Past Fontbonne in Wydown Showdown

St. Ann, Mo., March 26, 2019 – Junior Amy Walsh went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base to lead the Washington University in St. Louis softball team to a 7-1 win at Fontbonne University Tuesday in the Wydown Showdown in St. Ann, Mo.

WashU improved to 8-7 with the win, while Fontbonne dropped to 4-12. The Bears have won three of their last four games. 

Sophomore Natasha Ramakrishnan had her second-consecutive multi-hit game following a 2-for-4 performance with a double. The Bears had seven hits in the win, and took advantage of six Fontbonne errors.

Freshman Madison Denton (5-3) picked up the win in relief shutting out the Griffins in four innings with two strikeouts. Freshman Holly Stoner made the start and allowed two hits and a solo homerun in three innings.

WashU jumped in front 3-0 after scoring three unearned runs in the second inning off three Fontbonne errors. Walsh delivered the big hit of the inning with a sharp single up the middle scoring two.

Walsh pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fourth with an RBI single scoring senior Josi Elder, and then senior Taylor Arends drove in another run after she reached on an error.

Freshman Nicole Hay added an RBI groundout in the seventh to round out the scoring.

Melanie Russo had a long home run in the second for the lone tally for Fontbonne. Denton and Stoner limited Fontbonne to just two hits.

WashU opens a four-game series against Brandeis University (10-0) on Friday, March 29. Game one is set for 2 p.m. Brandeis is one of three undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division III.
