WashU Drops Pair of Games at Schutt Invite

St. Louis, Mo., March 17,2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team suffered a pair of defeats Sunday on the final day of the Schutt Invitational-I at the WU Softball Field in St. Louis.

WashU dropped an 8-2 decision to Wartburg College in the opener, and then allowed three runs in the fifth in a 5-4 loss to DePauw University in the nightcap.

Wartburg 8 WashU 2 – Game One
The Bears were limited to five hits in the game one defeat. Freshman Madison Denton (3-2) took the loss allowing eight hits and six earned runs in five innings pitched.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, WashU tied the score with a pair of runs off three hits. Sophomore Julia Flores drove in the first run with a double to center after just missing her second homerun in as many days, and then she scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Wartburg (11-5) scored four runs in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to put the game out of reach. The Knight had nine hits in the win. 

DePauw 5, WashU 4 – Game Two
DePauw took a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and third innings off sophomore starting pitcher Kendall Schwartz.

The Bears answered back with three runs in the fourth to take the 3-2 lead. Flores singled to right to drive in the first run, and then freshman Katie Gould stole home for the second tally. Flores scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Josi Elder to give the Bears a one-run lead. 

Junior Mikaela Arredondocame up big in the top of the fifth with two outs as she ripped a single to left to drive in a run to make it 4-2. 

DePauw, who went 4-0 over the weekend, took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth on three hits and took advantage of two WashU errors. The Bears had runners on first and third with two outs in the seventh, but Cami Henry struck out Arredondo to end the game.

Sophomore Abby Graegin (1-3) took the loss despite allowing two hits and one unearned run in two innings. Schwartz allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) in four innings.

Gould (2-for-3, run scored, stolen base) and junior Amy Walsh (2-for-4, run scored) each had multi-hit games for WashU, who had seven hits but committed two errors.

WashU (5-5) hosts The Schutt Invitational-I on Saturday-Sunday, March 23-24, at the WU Softball Field. The Bears have two games on Saturday vs. No. 8 Coe (14-1) at 11 a.m. and No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan (6-1) at 1:15 p.m.
