St. Louis, Mo., May 2, 2017 — Senior outfielder Hannah Mehrle earned 2017 University Athletic Association (UAA) Position Player of the Year and junior Anna McKee picked up UAA Pitcher of the Year honors to highlight six selections on the 2017 All-UAA Softball Team, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
McKee, Mehrle and sophomore infielder Taylor Arends earned first-team honors, while junior pitcher Maggie Clapp, senior outfielder Kenzie James and senior outfielder Janet Taylor earned second-team honors.
In addition, head coach Michelle Venturella and assistant coach Kaitlyn Dulac and Mitch Thomas were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.
Mehrle has started all 38 games in left field and is batting .426 with two homeruns and a team-best 42 RBIs. Mehrle leads the conference in doubles (16), RBIs (53) and hits (58), and is tops on the team with 11 multiple-RBI and 20 multiple-hit games. Mehrle was named the Fastpitch News National Hitter of the Week on March 21, and is a two-time UAA Hitter of the Week selection. She ranks first in school history in hits (225), batting average (.433) and triples (13), and has earned all-UAA honors three times in her career.
McKee has a 16-3 record and a 1.72 earned run average with six shutouts and 14 complete games. She ranks first in the UAA in wins and complete games, second in strikeouts (152) and third in ERA. McKee also ranks 24th in NCAA Division III in strikeouts per seven innings (8.2). She was named the Fastpitch News National Pitcher of the Week on May 2, and is a three-time UAA Pitcher of the Week honoree.
Arends has started all 38 games at shortstop and is batting .413 with one homerun and 31 RBIs. She is second in the UAA in hits (52) and third in RBIs (31), and also ranks second on the squad with 17 multiple-hit games. Arends is a two-time all-UAA selection, and earned UAA Hitter of the Week on April 3 and April 24.
Clapp has a 9-9 record with a 2.11 earned run average with three shutouts and eight complete games. She has wins this season over No. 15 St. Catherine and No. 22 St. Thomas, and earned UAA Pitcher of the Week honors on March 6 and April 24. Clapp has allowed just four earned runs in the last 47 innings, and ranks second in the conference in shutouts and fifth in wins.
James has started 37 games this season in right field and is hitting .417 with a team-high 34 runs scored and 15 stolen bases. She is second in the UAA in runs scored, fourth in hits (50) and stolen bases and fifth in batting average. James has recorded a hit in 29-of-37 games played, and ranks first in school history in stolen bases (73) and second in runs scored (139). She is a two-time all-UAA honoree.
Taylor has started all 38 games this season in centerfield and is batting .361 with one home run and 27 RBIs and leads the team with 19 walks. She is first in the UAA in sacrifice flies (3), second in walks and fifth in RBIs. Taylor is also second on the squad with nine multiple-RBI games. A three-time all-UAA honoree, she ranks first in school history in walks (71), eighth in batting average (.379) and ninth in RBIs (125).
WashU concluded regular season play with a 26-12 overall record and won the 2017 UAA Championship. The Bears have the top strength of schedule (.640) in NCAA Division III.
