WashU Hosts Case Western Reserve in Four-Game Series


BEAR HEADLINES – Washington University in St. Louis returns to conference play by hosting a four-game series with Case Western Reserve University Friday-Saturday, April 14-15. Game one on Friday is set for 3 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY – WashU leads the all-time series with Case Western Reserve 28-6 dating back to the 2000 season. The Bears have won the last five meetings between the two teams.

NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP – Sophomore Taylor Arends belted her first homerun of the season, a three-run shot, to lead the Bears past the University of Chicago in game one of the four-game series on April 8. Arends is tied for the team lead and ranks third in the conference in RBIs with 24.

MEHRLE CLOSING IN ON RECORD  – Senior Hannah Mehrle recorded the 200th hit of her career in a 10-8 win over Emory University in game two on April 1. Mehrle is the fourth player in school history to record 200 or more hits, and is 17 shy of the school record set by Maggie Mullen (221, 2011-14).

HEAD COACH MICHELLE VENTURELLA – Head coach Michelle Venturella picked up career win number 200 following a 9-1 victory over Smith College March 15 in Leesburg, Fla. Venturella has a 209-214 (.494) career record in nine seasons as a collegiate coach – 14-9 at WashU and 195-205 at University of Illinois at Chicago.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE – WashU ranks second out of 415 teams in NCAA Division III in toughest schedule. The Bears past opposition has a .669 winning percentage (243-120).

18TH SEASON OF SOFTBALL – WashU has compiled a 543-210-1 (.721) overall record in 18 seasons of softball, and has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including an NCAA Runner-Up finish in 2007. The Bears have also won nine University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships – 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015.
