Softball Hosts WashU Invitational Friday-Sunday


St. Louis, Mo., March 23, 2017 – The Washington University in St. Louis softball team hosts the five-team WashU Invitational on Friday-Sunday, March 24-26, at the WU Softball Field. The Bears take on No. 10 Coe (13-1) Friday at 4:45 p.m. in the opener.

MEHRLE NAMED NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Senior outfielder Hannah Mehrle was named the Fastpitch News National Hitter of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the website. Mehrle batted .485 (16-33) with 14 runs scored and 14 RBIs in eight games a week ago. She recorded six multi-hit games, and had five extra-base hits including one round-tripper. 

HEATING UP AT THE PLATE – Senior Janet Taylor has been on a recent surge at the plate hitting .500 (12-for-24) with one homerun and 10 RBIs since being moved out of the leadoff spot on March 13. Freshman Amy Walsh has also been hot at the plate hitting .650 (13-for-20) with 10 runs score in the last six games.

VENTURELLA WITH 200TH WIN – Head coach Michelle Venturella picked up career win number 200 following a 9-1 victory over Smith College March 15 in Leesburg, Fla. Venturella has a 203-209 (.493) career record in nine seasons as a collegiate coach – 8-4 at WashU and 195-205 at University of Illinois at Chicago.

18TH SEASON OF SOFTBALL – WashU has compiled a 537-205-1 (.723) overall record in 18 seasons of softball, and has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears have also won nine University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships – 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015.
